Influenced by products and illustrators such as Notion, Minna no Ginko, Yu Nagaba, Noritake, I started drawing this style of illustration known as 'line drawing' in 2021. They were initially used as illustrations in my 22nd annual collection.
For me personally, it all started with rough hand-drawn black and white sketches of landscapes from my college days. I've always been a big fan of illustrators Noritake and Nagaba Yuu, whose work is a common sight on the streets, in exhibitions, stores, and magazines around Tokyo. The simple black and white lines always manage to create a relaxed and comfortable feeling, and it's no surprise that Snoopy's cartoons are also quite popular in Japan.
Imitating this style, I often draw things around me, movies I've seen, and scenes I've experienced in this form. With the rise of Notion's popularity, there's been a surge of internet products decorated with line illustrations, so I started trying to pair my work with this type of illustration. Now, there are a lot of illustrators specializing in this style, and it's heartening to see that even though similar styles may look alike, the illustrators still strive to differentiate themselves in brush details, facial expressions, shadow forms, color, and proportion to avoid being too uniform.
Although I really like this style, I have to admit that its versatility is limited, making it difficult to adapt to more dynamic and colorful images. This has become a significant regret for me when creating works and portfolios.
